The PostgreSQL database management system has long been one of the sleeper hits of the open source world, kind of like the [[Apache Software Foundation|Apache]] web server.  PostgreSQL provides rock-solid, standard compliant, performant back-end database functionality capable of dealing with terabytes of information.  It is all Free Open Source Software, released under the near maximally open [[BSD License]].
