"The open source model has transformed software development by providing faster demand-side learning, higher quality, better security, shorter development cycles, and lower prices than closed platform development models."
- LF Launch Announcement

In 2007 the two main Linux organizations, the Free Software Group that maintained the Linux Standard Base, and the Open Source Development Labs that coordinated new Linux development to meet the demands of carriers and others, merged into a single organization called the Linux Foundation (LF), with the primary aim of fostering the growth of Linux. The LF sponsors the work of Linux creator Linus Torvalds and other leading Linux development personnel, sometimes called a safe harbour as it helps prevents their work from being coopted by a single organization. The LF is supported by a wide range of leading Linux and open source companies and developers from around the world.
